Internship Interview: Abigail Graves

Raymond James Technical Writing Internship
In Summer 2025, I had the opportunity to intern as a technical writer in the Information Technology department at Raymond James in St. Petersburg. This position involved working on a team alongside other technical writers on various projects and content management tasks, including creating instructional guides and other informational content that help RJ financial advisors navigate the technologies and applications involved in their work and in servicing their clients. I was tasked, for example, with working on and revising the RJ intranet pages that give instructions for how to use RJ various programs and applications, and working on a reference guide where I had to source instructions from various locations and compile it into a single database.
This internship helped me develop a lot of knowledge surrounding the field of technical writing in general, but also taught me about the more specific expectations and skills needed for a corporate technical writing job. One of the most interesting aspects I took away from my experience was the many ways people come to be a technical writer— on my team alone, the backgrounds of the content writers ranged from advertising, to retail management, to creative writing. I left knowing that no matter your background or education, you can easily build up a base of skills and experience to become a technical writer, and adapt it to fit into any tech writing work environment or industry you are aiming for.
