George Burruss presents on Oct. 23 as part of the Raymond James Innovation Insights speaker series.

George Burruss, PhD, associate professor and chair of the Department of Criminology, was invited to present "Why Smart People Fall for Fake Emails and How to See the Con Coming: The Psychology Behind Phishing" at the Raymond James St. Petersburg branch on Oct. 23 as part of the company’s internal Innovation Insights speaker series.

Doctoral students and Cybercrime Interdisciplinary Behavioral Research Lab (C.I.B.R.) managers Courtney Weber and Marlena Bolton, along with Bressia Borja, attended the presentation alongside approximately 350 Raymond James employees, both in person and virtually.

Burruss’s presentation explored the psychological factors that make individuals vulnerable to phishing scams and offered strategies to recognize and prevent them — a timely topic in recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
