High schoolers explore filmmaking at ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Tampa, gaining skills in scriptwriting, editing, and collaboration to create original films.

In The Art of Filmmaking at ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Tampa, high school students explore the foundations of digital video, sound, and electronic art production. Over an intensive week, they focus on visual storytelling through shot composition, cinematography, lighting, and editing techniques, building skills essential to creating impactful films. Through hands-on projects, they work collaboratively in a creative environment, learning both the technical and interpersonal skills needed for future opportunities in college applications, scholarships, and creative careers.

By the end of the week, students have crafted their own short films, which they showcase at a final screening event for family and friends. This immersive experience allows them to build a digital portfolio while navigating the challenges of long-distance and remote production, making it an invaluable opportunity to grow as filmmakers.

Registration for all 2026 summer camps will open on February 1, 2026.

ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking has a capacity of 20 campers.

Who are the ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Faculty/Staff that lead the ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking summer camp?

Leading ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬'s Art of Filmmaking camp, Ryne Heslin brings extensive academic and artistic experience to the classroom. After completing his BFA at the University of South ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬, Heslin earned his MFA from the University of California San Diego. In his current role as Graduate Program Facilitator and Assistant Professor of Instruction with ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬'s School of Art and Art History, he teaches a diverse range of courses including Video, Animation, Digital Drawing, and Sculpture. As an interdisciplinary artist, his creative practice investigates how knowledge, ideas, individuals, and reality are constructed and understood.

Do participants need prior experience with video production or editing software?

No prior experience is necessary! Our program is designed to accommodate all skill levels, and we will provide guidance on operating cameras and using video editing software.

The ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking summer camp is held at the ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Tampa Campus, within the Fine Arts Building (FAH). The camp's location is 13001 ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Laurel Drive, FAH 110, Tampa, FL 33620.

What time is drop-off and pick-up for ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking?

Our staff will be ready to welcome your child for drop-off at 8:50 AM in front of the Fine Arts Building (FAH) building, with pick-up starting at 4:00 PM. If you are running late for drop-off or pick-up, please call our office at (813) 974-3355 to let us know.

After registering for ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking, when will I start receiving logistical details, including drop-off and pick-up times?

You will receive several reminder emails leading up to the camp start date. Emails will be sent 60, 30, 14, 7, and 1 day prior, each containing important information to ensure a successful experience at the ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmkaing

Residential Options

Are there residential options available for the ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Art of Filmmaking?

Yes, the Art of Filmmaking Program is eligible for Rocky’s Residents, a residential add-on offered for select high school programs. This option provides 6 days and 5 nights of supervised on-campus housing, meals, and evening programming that supports community building and exposure to university life.

During registration for your day camp, you will have the option to add Rocky's Residents as part of the process. There is no separate registration required for the residential program.

How much does the Rocky's Residents residential add-on cost?

The cost for Rocky's Residents is $1,395 per camper. This includes:

  • 6 days and 5 nights of accommodation at Juniper-Poplar Residence Hall
  • All meals provided at ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Dining Halls
  • Supervision and activities led by trained counselors
  • Recreation and wellness activities, including sports, fitness challenges, and more
  • Access to campus facilities, such as recreational fields and study lounges
  • A campus tour and presentations from ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ Admissions and Student Success
  • Evening events with student organizations and ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ faculty
  • Laundry facilities for campers' use
  • '24-hour on-call emergency maintenance and support

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or transfer a camp registration, please email youthxp@usf.edu.

Cancellations or transfer requests received at least 15 business days prior to the camp start date will be eligible for a refund or transfer to another available camp, minus any administrative or processing fees. Cancellations or transfer requests received within 15 business days of the camp start date are not eligible for a refund or transfer. No refunds will be issued after a camp has begun, regardless of the number of days attended or participation level. No refunds will be issued if a participant is dismissed from camp due to a violation of the camp’s conduct policy or code of behavior.

We make every effort to run all camps exactly as scheduled. In the unlikely event it becomes necessary to cancel, postpone, or combine camps, or change a camp location, you will be notified by email or phone. Please ensure your contact information is up to date. If ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ cancels a camp, you will receive a full refund. If ÊÖ»ú¿´Æ¬ reschedules a camp, you will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer to the new session.
