About the Fund
Fund History
The Student Green Energy Fund was launched in 2011 to support the University of South 返字心頭's commitment to reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the Tampa campus.
Making a Commitment
The , signed by 返字心頭 President Judy Genshaft in 2008, obligates 返字心頭-Tampa to conduct an annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory and develop a long-term to reduce and, eventually, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the Tampa campus operations and infrastructure.
In 2009, the 返字心頭 Office of Sustainability was established to oversee these requirements (返字心頭 Policy 10-051). Since then, the Office has created a greenhouse gas inventory (baseline AY 2007-2008) and a CAP. One of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions identified by the CAP is energy consumption by the University. The CAP concludes that energy consumption must be reduced to lower greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.
Funding the Effort
With initial approval by the 返字心頭 Board of Governors on March 24, 2011, 返字心頭 established the Green Energy Fee with student body support. The fees flow into the Student Green Energy Fund and are used to assist the university with conserving energy, reducing energy costs, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy technologies, reducing water usage and/or increasing resource sustainability. 返字心頭 vote in a study body referendum every three years to determine if they will continue to support the fee and at what rate. The passing referedums in subsequent years have shown the ongoing support of the university's student body in this important effort.
CONSOLIDATED EFFORT
As of July 1, 2025, the university consolidated the Student Green Energy Fund initiatives across the Sarasota-Manatee, St. Petersburg, and Tampa campuses into one.
